Bagcilar is a heavily urbanised, working class district of Istanbul. In the mid to late twentieth century, the district grew as a light to mid industrial region – particularly with light engineering, textiles, and printing. Residential zones grew out of this, sometimes in a planned but mostly in an unplanned manner.
Today, Bagcilar leads the way in the urban transformation of Istanbul. Its border with the Media Highway (Basin ekspres) has seen a huge growth of large scale mixed use compounds – which have only been able to come about because of the large plots of land used by the light industry.
Two metro lines already serve the region, M7 and M1A, and a further two are expanding into the region – M3 Bakirkoy and M9 Atakoy lines.
